The AFOSR (Air Force Office of Scientific Research) distributes its investments in the basic research program worldwide through more than 200 leading academic institutions, 1,200 grants, 100 industry-based contracts, and over 250 internal AFRL research efforts. AFOSR's focus is on research areas that offer significant and comprehensive benefits to our national capabilities in preserving both war and peace. These areas are organized and managed in four scientific headings:

1. STRATEGY AND DOCTRINE: Aims to enhance knowledge and understanding of geopolitical and other issues related to national security environments affecting Air Force operations.

2. FORCE MODERNIZATION AND EMPLOYMENT: Identifies and assesses ways in which technological advancements and new operational concepts can enhance the Air Force's ability to meet future operational demands. This research includes technology feasibility, performance, cost, and risk assessments.

   Specialized areas include intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, mobility, long-range strike, combat air forces, command and control, space, cyber, and nuclear.

3. RESOURCE MANAGEMENT: Analyzes policies and practices within the framework of three themes:

   • Resilience of DAF facilities, assets, and information
   • Efficient and effective allocation of resources
   • Health of the defense industry and technology base

   The aim of the research conducted within the program is to maximize the efficiency and effectiveness of operations in an environment where resources are limited.

4. WORKFORCE, DEVELOPMENT, AND HEALTH: Examines the size and composition of the Air Force's workforce and addresses the best ways to define, sustain, renew, deliver, and coordinate critical workforce elements.
